TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT NEW SECURITY TOOLKITS USING STEGANOGRAPHY COMBINING WITH CRYPTOGRAPHY: Cryptography and steganography being two independent strong areas in the process of incorporating security to transmitted data, a merged process combining these two aspects will have a definite impact. Although a lot of work already has taken place in this regard, still there is scope to have a further research in this combined aspect.

TO DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT NEW APPROACHES ON COST/EFFORT ESTIMATION IN SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT: This is a striking area for research in the field of software engineering. It can include observing and analyzing all the existing approaches to develop some efficient approaches. My new book [ISBN: 978-3-8443-0082-6] in e-market published in last January by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing of Germany is simply being used as a global platform to share my doctoral research with enthusiastic scholars in the field of theoretical cryptology.

Six encryption techniques have been presented here, all of which had been developed and implemented during my research that ended effectively in early 2004. All these techniques cause implementation in bit-level using respective private keys. Using some selected parameters, performances of these techniques have been assessed and consequently, these performances have been compared with RSA technique, resulting in an observation of reasonable level of compatibility with RSA, although the solution offered by RSA is based on public key. Based on those six independent encryption techniques, an integrated technique termed as Integrated Encryption System (IES) has been proposed and presented with set of all schematic and operational characteristics.

Unlike conventional books on cryptology, this one, more suitably that can be termed as a monograph, consists of no exercise, no sample questions, no excessive discussion on different aspects of cryptology, but simply is targeted to help those, who work or like to work for bringing innovations in the field of cryptology. LAP Lambert has set a price of 79 EURO for this book. Availability of a few copies of this book in the library of a research or educational organization may help its young researchers to get the best out of it.

Successful RFA on my Spouse

Reference to my last post entitled, "EPS and Expected RFA on my Spouse", the procedure of Electrophysiological Study (EPS), followed by Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) was successfully done on my beloved spouse, Piali, on August 22 (Sunday) by a group of Cardiologists of The Mission Hospital, Durgapur. She was discharged on the very next day. Slowly but steadily she is recovering from her fatigue state. Doctors expressed their expectation that she is in future not likely to face the trouble of high palpitation. I like to express my wholehearted gratitude to the hospital authority for their huge caring effort towards my spouse. A very special appreciation is also due to The New India Assurance Co. Ltd. and its allied TPA for the financial support they provided for this entire procedure through my group insurance policy with them as an employee of Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College, Durgapur.

Let me hope that with all these efforts, she will be getting a permanent recovery to enjoy a hassle-free life. Let see.

EPS and Expected RFA on my Spouse

Piali, my spouse, faced another episode of high heartbeat in the evening on July 5 last. Ultimately, I had to rush driving my own car with her to the Emergency Section of the Mission Hospital, where she recovered from that fatigue state and came back to residence after a couple of hours.

In an attempt to have her permanent recovery from such irregular heartbeat, cardiologists of the Mission Hospital decided to have the Electrophysiological Study (EPS) and subsequently, if needed, Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) on her, which is likely to be held in 3rd or 4th week of forthcoming August.

Let us pray to the almighty to have a permanent recovery of my beloved spouse, who faces such a fatigue state, may be, only once in a year but probably is much more fit than me in rest 364 days in the year. Apart from the rest, she does require your best of wishes.

Let us dream of her everlasting recovery.

Means to protect Electronic Data

One fascinating way of ensuring security of electronic data is to embed it within an image and to transmit the image to desired recipient. An image being a collection of pixels and even a single pixel being a collection of binary digits, replacement of some less significant binary digits by binary digits corresponding to aforesaid data does not practically make a change to that image, when viewed in naked eyes. Therefore, even the existence of secret data within that image is hard to realize. The formulation of effective strategies to implement this concept, technically termed as Steganography, has been a burning area of research for last several years. Over the years, encryption has been a means of protecting electronic data. Prior to its transmission, data is encoded using an encryption algorithm. Apart from the original data, a value, termed as key, is fed into the encryption program to encode the data to generate the ready-to-be-transmitted encrypted data. In receiving end, the encrypted data, along with a key, is fed into the decryption program to decode the encrypted data. Thus for a communication of data over a transmission channel, both the ends of the channel can be equipped with encryption devices, one for performing encryption and the other for doing the reverse. Incidentally, keys used in both ends of transmission channel may be identical or different. In former case, termed as private-key encryption policy, the key-sharing requires a lot of care to maintain the privacy. The headache of key-sharing is avoided in public-key encryption policy by using a pair of keys, the public key of receiver during encryption and the private key of receiver during decryption. Authentication is closely associated with security. One can send an authenticated or digitally signed electronic message by encrypting it with his own private key, which, in receiving end, can only be decrypted through the corresponding public-key. Developing public-key encryption policy with proven efficiency is one striking challenge for researchers. However, even a private-key policy with a reasonably large key-space is arguably compatible with a public-key policy. As per an appealing observation, even a fast processor with capability of decrypting 1000000 decryptions in 1 µs requires around 5000000000000000000 years to successfully break a 128-bit private-key used during a common implementation of Rijndael, a proposed private-key policy selected by NIST (US-based National Institute of Standards and Technology) as an AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm. If an image with encrypted message embedded into it is digitally signed, it becomes fairly non-vulnerable against possible attacks.

Very recently, I completed preparing a PPT entitled AN APPROACH TOWARDS DEVELOPMENT OF 252-BIT INTEGRATED ENCRYPTION SYSTEM (IES) deliverable tentatively in 3 hours.

Through its first two phases, I focus on approach of design and development of some of my own ciphers, which I developed during my work for PhD. The proposed 252-bit IES is ultimately presented in its third and final phase. A presentation like this might be of some help for upcoming researchers in areas surrounding Cryptology.

I may think of delivering this presentation, if I get an opportunity to share it with a gathering of learned scholars.

My Scholar, a step away from being PhD

Pranam Paul, my first PhD scholar in NIT - Durgapur, appeared recently in his final viva-voce in front of the learned panel of experts including the invited external expert at Department of ECE in NIT-Durgapur. He did reasonably well. This event was in consequence of receiving positive reports for his Thesis from examiners in India and abroad.

In this way, Pranam Paul, who has been under my supervision since the end of 2005, is only a step away from receiving his PhD degree. This is simply an outcome of his continuous dedicated and energetic effort.

Shifted to Own Residence

It is nice to share with you that on 31st July last we have shifted to our newly purchased flat, E-03 at newly constructed Madhu Mamata Apartment at Uttarayan, J. P. Avenue, Sagarbhanga, Durgapur-713211. It is a splendid experience of living at the own residence. This is on the third floor with the scene of busy highway being available from the front side balcony. The 50-flat apartment is yet to be inaugurated formally, although around 15 families already have started residing. We all in our family are proud of being in this apartment. Your best of wishes is what we desire to have.

I’m happy to share with you that my paper, Ensuring Information Security through 123-Bit Recursive Substitution of Bits through Prime-nonprime detection of sub-stream (RSBP) has earned a place in Journal of Scientific & Industrial Research (ISSN: 0022-4456) in vol. 68, July 2009, pp. 584-591.

The paper, comprising of a very small but significant part of my own doctoral work in the area of cryptology, is co-authored by J. K. Mandal, currently associated with Kalyani University as Professor of Department of Computer Science & Engineering and Dean of Engineering, Technology and Management, under whose supervision I did my doctoral work during 2000 – 2004. The initial version of the paper was communicated in June 2007. After a constant interactive peer review process, finally it was accepted for publication on 27 March 2009.

This paper presents a 123-bit private-key based block-cipher, which is capable of encrypting data files of up to 11 MB. It is formulated on the basis of base-10 value corresponding to a block of bits, which is to be checked if is prime or not. It results in an alteration of size for file being encrypted. Its executable performance is analyzed on the basis of execution time, graphical layout of frequency distribution of characters, and Chi square values for varying degrees of freedom. The proposed cipher, termed as RSBP, is found to be highly compatible with existing cryptosystems.

Jishu in St. Xavier's School

An admission test for around 100 candidates was held on 27-03-2009 and on 30-03-2009 the list of only a few selected candidates was disclosed. His admission process is also over. Now, he is counting days for going to his new school.

A Pathetic Bus Accident

I, along with all in my family, deeply express grief at the very pathetic bus accident of 20-year-old daughter of one of my elder brothers. The incident occurred near Gairkata, a small town in Jalpaiguri, only a few days before Mahalaya when she was coming back from her college in Jalpaiguri to her own residence at Banarhat. Having deadly problem in the entire lower part of her body, she was immediately rushed to a local health centre, then to a private nursing home in Jalpaiguri, then to another private nursing home in Siliguri. Being serious in condition and being recommended by experts in Siliguri, she was taken immediately to Chennai-Apollo. She was operated on 06.10.2008 for above three hours. She has been taken back to her residence on 18.10.2008. Doctors in Apollo are hopeful regarding her recovery, but till now there is no any apparent sign of improvement. May be, even if she recovers through continuous physiotherapy, it will take much time before she comes back to normal life.

I pray to the almighty for a sure recovery of such a dear friend of mine. The recovery is much better to be late than never. I want you too to be part of this prayer.

My close association and relationship with Mr. Prasun Banerjee, an icon of Indian Football, is something that makes me proud and privileged. Before coming into the personal contact with him, I had knowledge only about his huge technical efficiency in the game of soccer. But afterward by virtue of the growing intimacy through constant personal interaction, I’ve realized how gentle, kind, honest he is as a human being. He is a nice family-man. The prestigious green-maroon Mohunbagan-jersey that he gifted to me during his family-tour to my house is kept with the most care in my collection. His brother-like love and affection toward me and my family, his motivating and encouraging advice to me, his innocent sharing of personal happiness and sorrow with me, his respect toward my highest academic degree, all together have made him a real friend not only to me but to my family as well . “Hats off to you, Prasunda. A Period of Extreme Anxiety

Suddenly on August 1 last, my spouse Piali had to be taken to the Emergency Section in The Mission Hospital, Durgapur, where she was immediately admitted with abnormally high heart-bit. She recovered slowly and steadily under continuous careful treatment of eminent cardiologists, and finally she was discharged on the next day. It was a period of extreme anxiety, followed by an ultimate big relief.

I'm glad to share that very recently I received the acceptance notification of the research paper entitled, "Development and Analysis of Ciphering Model through Recursive Positional Substitution based on Prime-Nonprime of Cluster" authored jointly by myself and Prof. (Dr.) J. K. Mandal for publication in a coming issue in AMSE (France) Journals.

The work presented in this paper was done during my doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. (Dr.) J. K. Mandal. This is our third paper in AMSE Journals.

Under a Permanent Roof

Very recently I've booked a Flat in a nice 6-storied sophisticated apartment under construction in the beautiful city of Durgapur, thus ending my 8-year journey of living under others' roof. During mid-2009 we'll be shifting to the new residence.

Having an orthodox "Sweet Home" in my native place, Birpara, in Dooars, I'll like to enjoy the touch of Flat-Culture through my newly bought flat in Madhu Mamata Apartment here in Durgapur.

Your good wishes are what will make this "Entry" a happy, prosperous, and an eternally peaceful one.

Maker of my career, Prof. (Dr.) J. K. Mandal and my very favourite Prof. Piyal Sarkar, a charming personality in teaching community were invited in my workplace, Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College, Durgapur as Speakers in a Technical Seminar. Being Head of Department of MCA, Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College, I took the initiative of such an event back in October, 2007.

We were together throughout the day. Experiences of passing time with teachers like Prof. Mandal and Prof. Sarkar will be kept in the Golden Cage of my memory for ever.

Hello, I'm Saurabh Dutta.
Currently I'm associated with Dr. B. C. Roy Engineering College, Durgapur, West Bengal, India as Assistant Professor and Head, Department of MCA.
It's my eighth year in the profession of teaching. Prior to joining in my current assignment, I was in Management Institute of Durgapur as Assistant Professor, MCKV Institute of Engineering as Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Information technology, Siliguri Institute of Technology as Lecturer, all being in different parts of West Bengal, India. Earlier I was in Nepal for nearly three years associated with Shree Gomendra Multiple College affiliated to Purbanchal University, Nepal as Lecturer and Faculty Chief, Faculty of BCA. I started my professional career as Post Graduate Teacher, Computer in BSF Senior Secondary Residential School, Kadamtala, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India.
I'm a Ph. D. in Computer Science from The University of North Bengal, West Bengal, India. I was awarded so for my dissertation, "An Approach Towards Development of Efficient Encryption Techniques". Cryptography was the area of my doctoral work, and at present I'm involved in supervising one scholar of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, West Bengal, India for his doctoral work in the field of development of storage-efficient cryptographic protocols. Also, I'm associated with areas like Steganography, Public-key Cryptography. Till date, I've around twenty three publications in Journals of International/National (India) levels and Proceedings of Conferences of International/National (Indian) levels.
I've authored one book entitled, "Introductory Systems Analysis and Design" that has been published by Dhanpat Rai and Co., New Delhi, India.
My beloved wife, Piali, an M. A. in Economics is the source of inspiration behind all my current creative activities. I get motivated to do better and better looking at my four-and-half-year-old sweet kid, Spandanil (Jishu). The blessing of my mother, Mrs. Lekha Dutta is my asset. Encouragement of my sister, Pamela is a sponteneous activity. My departed father, Late Balai Dutta used to tell, "Your deed will decide your future", and my journey is a simple follower of his words.

Isn't he looking naughty? He is.
Look at the Black Sun Glass. He pronounces it as "Chamash". And he must need it while coming back from school, may be "fashion" is more than "need".
Isn't it that he is symbolising the current generation?

It's a generation in which kids do prefer fashion that is carefully careless, prefer to learn technologies that is interestingly serious, prefer to follow news and views from mass media that is clearly attrative, and many many more. Jishu is only an example, isn't it?
